 Mountcharles
In Irish, its name Tamhnach an tSalainn (hill of salt), refers to an old practice of running seawater down "salthill" on dry days and collecting the salt after the water had evaporated. The Gaelic translation of Mount Charles ("Moin Searlas") is in disuse.

The Village Tavern in Mountcharles
spacer
Mountcharles is situated 5 km west of Donegal Town on an elevated site high above sea level which offers spectacular views of Donegal Bay. The village is named after its founder, Charles Conyngham, who built the village towards the end of the 17th century. In the 18th century the local people worked in the salt works which was also founded by the Conyngham family. The 19th century author and short story writer, Seamus McManus, was from Mountcharles.

The Village Tavern in Mountcharles is an attractive restored stone building. Inside you will find plenty of craic, colourful characters, and a bar menu to challenge any 5-star restaurant. A major attraction here is the excellent choice of bar meals prepared by chef Graham Flannery who runs the hostelry together with Kim Kelly. An accomplished cook, Graham's training includes experience at the K-Club, Hibernian, and Merrion Hotels. During the tourist season, the bar offers live music and the tavern also has comfortable accommodation available in ten guest rooms, seven of which have en suite facilities.
