In the 1880s the Commercial Cable Company laid their
first Transatlantic telegraph cable from Waterville to Canso, Nova
Scotia. The cable station at Waterville was clearly an impressive
self-contained community. The buildings that remain are in good repair
and many vestiges of corporate styling remain. It is well worth a
visit and I hope some, at least, of the remaining vestiges of the
Commercial Cable Company can be preserved.
Waterville is known worldwide for its 18 hole championship
golf course - Over 100 years old, Waterville is rated among the top
5 courses in Ireland and the top 20 links courses in the world. The
course was a noted training venue for British Open by four of last
five champions and combines sand dunes gorse and native grasses,
firm fairways, sod faced bunkers and subtle putting surfaces all
intertwined by the ever changing weather. The town was a favorite holiday spot of Charlie Chaplin and his
family. There is a statue of him in the centre of the village in
his memory. It is the home of Mick O'Dwyer, footballer and former
Kerry football manager in the 1970's and '80's. |
